Solar water pumps have endless benefits. It can run off-grid and provide water in even the driest of remote areas, not to mention you can use it during a power outage. The following is a guide to the operation of a solar water pump.

Types of solar pumping systems?

A solar well pump uses electricity from a photovoltaic array to run an electric pump system that pumps water from the well.

There are 3 common types of solar good pumping systems:

Submersible pumps.

Ground pumps.

Floating pumps.

Why do you need a solar well pump?

There are many reasons why you need a solar well pump, but here are 4 main reasons:

This is a practical method of pumping (water has been used for a long time in remote areas, mainly for agricultural purposes)

This is a perfect off-grid pumping solution

You can get emergency power for pumping wells

You will save a lot by reducing your electricity bill.

Run a good pump on solar power (step by step process)

Before we discuss the steps, I must mention that this is a fairly technical process.

Therefore, you need the input of skilled drilling contractors and experienced solar contractors.

Also, if you already have an AC pump installed, you should skip setting up the pump.

Now let's get started.

1. Design steps

This is more of a research and evaluation step. Essentially, you need to determine the following in this step:

Average solar irradiance in the area where the well is located.

Perfect location for solar panels.

Optimal orientation and inclination of the solar array.

Ideal location for solar pumps and pump controllers.

Based on the above two factors, the required cable length, and pipe size.

Maximum flow and expected friction losses.

Expected dynamic head (maximum height at which water is pumped from the well) taking into account frictional losses in the pipeline.

2. Choose the most suitable solar well pumping system

If you are looking for a solar water pump for your well, this should be your main consideration:

Well pumps should match your well type, location, dynamic head, and flow requirements.

The great thing about solar water pump system manufacturers is that they provide software to help you choose the best water pump for your needs.

3. Selection and installation of photovoltaic arrays

First, you should understand that the DC well pump comes with enough solar panels to power it. Also, it comes with all installation components and installation guides.

On the other hand, if you want to convert an AC pump to solar energy, you will need to work with a solar technician to determine the number and size of solar panels you will need.

In general, though, the power output of the solar panel should match the power of the pump.

If your AC pump is 100W and a single solar panel is 20W, then you will need 5 of these modules.

To install the module, first fix the support structure, which can be a fixed ground or pole support. With this safety, you just need to install solar panels.

The optimum tilt angle for optimum power generation is 10°. This angle will also optimize the self-cleaning process of the solar panels in rainwater.

4. Wiring

This is the necessary connection required to integrate all solar pumping components.

Typically, you will follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the following 3 main connections:

PV array to pump controller

Pump controller to pump

Grounding of all exposed metal module frames

Tip: Make sure all connections are well supported and mechanically protected from damage.

5. Pump controller installation

The pump controller is essentially an MPPT for DC well pumps and an MPPT and inverter for AC well pumps.

Regardless of the configuration, the solar well pump controller should be mounted on the frame or mounting pole of the solar array.

The manufacturer's recommendations (including the degree of protection, which should be at least IP56) should also be followed.

6. Well pump/pipe installation

Here, the installation will vary depending on the type of pump you are dealing with.

Let's discuss surface pumps and submersible pumps.

Install surface well pumps

For surface well pumps, you should:

First, build a supporting base, preferably concrete. Note that the lift pump reduces vibrations that can interfere with surface water pumping.

Then use a sheet metal cover to protect the pump from direct sunlight.

Follow these recommendations when installing the suction pipe:

Make it lower than the inlet of the pump to prevent entrapment of air bubbles.

Keep pipe lengths as short as possible.

If the pipe must be longer than 3 meters, make sure to bury it in the ground to prevent the water from heating. This will damage the pump.

Make sure there is no debris at the end of the suction tube that could cause a blockage.

The discharge pipe should be installed in a position that continuously rises to the tank without bending.

Install the submersible well pump

For submersibles, here are some suggestions when installing the pump:

Make sure the pump is 1m (3.3 ft) above the bottom of the well.

The pump should be below the drop level so that the pump never runs dry.

Includes a water sensing system to prevent the pump from running dry.

Support the weight of the pump with cables fastened to the drilled cover.

When installing plumbing, follow these tips:

Screw the discharge tube onto the pump to support its weight.

Install a check valve on the discharge line just above the sump pump.

Install a gate valve on the discharge pipe above the well exit point.

That's it! You can now commission your solar well pumping system and pump water to your storage tank, harnessing the sun's free energy.
